Correlation of Immediate Post-op Vein Diameter with Arteriovenous Fistula Maturation Time

Resident doctor, Dra. Joelle Dela Cruz has an ongoing research entitled “Correlation of immediate post-op vein diameter with arteriovenous fistula maturation time (prospective cohort)”. Her study aims to correlate immediate postoperative vein diameter with the arteriovenous fistula maturation. Her study aims to determine the correlation of immediate post-operative vein diameter in the maturation of arteriovenous fistulas. This will determine the relationship of vein diameter with AVF blood flow and depth whether it has predictive value in the maturation of arteriovenous fistulas. The amount allotted for her research was Php 10,000.00.

There has been a steadfast increase in the incidence of chronic kidney disease patients. Implications of which is the risk of having end-stage renal disease needing maintenance renal replacement therapy. Of the RRTs, arteriovenous fistulas have been the preferred choice for accesses. This requires at least 4-6 weeks postoperative care to bring to maturation. The National Kidney Foundation - Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF-KDOQI) has set a guideline for clearing such fistulas for use in hemodialysis. One must have a flow greater than 600 mL/min, diameter at least 0.6 cm, no more than 0.6 cm deep, and discernible margins.
