Dra. Donna San Antonio, a resident doctor in the Department of Surgery specifically in the Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery has an ongoing research entitled “Trend and Outcomes of Post-Mastectomy Reconstruction Among Phyllodes Tumor Patients Seen in a Tertiary Private Hospital In The Philippines: A 6 Year Review”.

This is a retrospective review of phyllodes tumor patients who underwent surgical management in a private tertiary hospital from 2011-2020. Patient demographics, phyllodes subtype, surgical intervention, follow up data and recurrence were analyzed. Analysis of the rate of preoperative referral to plastic surgery and breast reconstruction were also done.
This study suggests that patients with malignant phyllodes tumors are likely to develop recurrence regardless of surgery type and margins. Margins less than 1cm might already be adequate for benign and borderline phyllodes tumors. Breast reconstruction may be offered to less aggressive tumors (benign and borderline) while delayed reconstruction is warranted for those with malignant phyllodes. There is a need for a large prospective study to develop future guidelines for phyllodes tumor management. The amount allotted for her research was Php 10,000.00.
